Mint House Cannabis Co. is a small scale, owner operated, medical cannabis farm and retail location located in mid coast Maine. Our mission is to offer our community premium, clean, soil-grown medicine at an affordable price, all while farming sustainably under the sun.
As well as our own products, our retail location carries various offerings from other caregivers whose growing philosophies match our own, from all across the great state of Maine.
Our Story
Mint House owners Sam and Jan are best friends of 30 years with over 20 years of combined experience in the cannabis industry.
Sam began cultivating medical cannabis in 2007 before moving to Los Angeles, California in 2009 to pursue a career in art and cannabis. While living in Topanga Canyon, Sam fell in love with growing cannabis outdoors, in the hills, under the sun.
In 2017, Jan packed up his life in NYC to join Sam and another old friend in Humboldt County, CA to run an industrial scale cannabis farm together. Sam and Jan managed that farm for a couple of years before relocating to Maine in 2020.
After two and a half years of growing the Mint House farm, we opened our first retail location at 9 Beaver St. in Belfast, Maine in January 2023.
Waldo County, Maine
The Homestead
Est. 2020
In June of 2020, Sam bought a six and a half acre property in the heart of Waldo County. Here, we cultivate cannabis alongside fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, all chosen for their synergy with cannabis cultivation.
At Mint House, we actively avoid synthetic inputs. All nutrients we use are either derived from the farm or are all-natural and responsibly sourced. Our small flock of laying hens and our homemade compost assist with fertilizer production as well.
We grow our seasonal crops with rain and ground water. We forgo plastic irrigation lines and in fact, find ourselves dry farming mostly: the plants naturally quenched by regular heavy rains and the shallow water table. Surprisingly, we only end up hand watering the garden a handful of times a season.
Our Philosophy
At Mint House, we strive to cultivate the most sustainable cannabis we can. We grow from both seed and clone, selecting genetics compatible with Maine outdoor growing conditions. We plant in the native soil and implement no-till, living soil practices.
We lay the foundation for our plants to grow vigorous, healthy and hearty enough to develop their own natural self defenses so they require less human intervention. As much as we can, we allow nature to take its course.
We try to be conscious of the materials we use on the farm and in our shop; reusing, recycling and repurposing what we can. We deliberately opt for biodegradable materials whenever possible. Our ultimate aim is to make organic grade product available at a fair value.
The Future
With each harvest, our knowledge of the Mint House terroir deepens and we learn how better to optimize the garden for the next season. Our hope is that, over time, our farm and business will be sustainable, self sufficient and regenerative.
